1985

Both Videotage and Zuni curated programs that dealt with gender and sexuality from an early stage. In 1985, Zuni held a gay film festival, Cinema & Homosexualites in its clubhouse in Causeway Bay, likely the first of its kind in Hong Kong.

In 1989, the first iteration of the acclaimed Hong Kong Lesbian & Gay Film Festival was held, founded by core Zuni member Edward Lam 林奕华 and sponsored by the Hong Kong Arts Centre.

Early video artworks exploring gender and sexuality include May Fung Mei-Wah 馮美華The Second Sex (1986), Ellen Pau's 鮑藹倫 Song of the Goddess (1992), Anson Mak Hoi Shan's 麥海珊 Two or Three Things I Know About Them (1991) and Yau Ching's 游靜 Suet-Sins Sisters (1999). Additionally, a number of early works in Super 8 by May Fung Mei-Wah 馮美華 explored issues related to women.
